How To Have a Better Pet
Whether you own a pure-bred dog or a mixed breed there are good reasons why your pet should be neutered. The number of healthy pet animals that have to be put to death by dog pounds and humane facilities each year because of the overpopulation of pets in the United States is a compelling reason for having your pet spayed or neutered, but,
There Are More Personal Reasons For Neutering
Your Pets--They Make Better Pets!!
Spaying a female dog will prevent the two or three heat cycles each year with their spotting and mess. Female dogs give off a penetrating, offensive odor before, during and after a heat cycle, that will permeate carpeting, drapes and furniture, giving a "doggy" odor to the house as well as attracting male dogs from miles around. If your neighbor's dog barks and howls and whines a lot, it may be the fault of your unspayed female. Some females do undergo adverse personality changes during the heat cycle and false pregnancies, vaginal infections, and the many medical problems involved in having an accidental litter of puppies. Animals that have been spayed have fewer problems with urinary infections and breast cancer.
Each time your female is bred, you are putting her life at risk!
Male dogs should be neutered as well. They will be less likely to jump fences or roam away from home. They are not as restless or noisy without cause. They are less aggressive with other dogs and will not lift their legs in the house, an instinctive reaction marking their territory that all male dogs have if they are sexually active. The sexually intact male dog, whether or not he has been used at stud, has more medical problems than the neutered male, including urinary infections, prostate problems and venereal diseases.
The Truth About Spaying and Neutering - No Animal Need Ever Be Used to Produce Puppies!!!
- Sexual activity will not mature a dog -- Either mentally or physically -- Just look at the teenage people you know! A dog will grow to his full potential of size, weight, and personality with good food, good care, and love.
- A dog will not become fat or lethargic because it is spayed or neutered.
- A dog will be as good a guard dog or protective even if it is neutered as is the sexually intact dog -- even better because its mind is on its job, not on the dog down the street.
- A dog will not have a change in personality if spayed or neutered. Personality and temperament are a product of heredity and environment, not hormones. Neutered animals will be less aggressive with other dogs, but their basic reactions to people will be the same.
- A dog that has never been allowed to be sexually active is never going
to miss it. Dogs do not have "feelings"
about sex as people do. It is strictly a mechanism for reproduction.
- Spaying your dog will save you money. If you take proper care of both the female and her litter of pups, you will lose money. Because of the lack of good homes you will be stuck with a bunch of rowdy, destructive, messy puppies you can't even give away.
- Neutering your male dog is for his protection. You will have fewer complaints from neighbors about noise and roaming. Sexually active males become escape artists and are often killed or injured in pursuit of sex.
- Unsupervised matings can often cause physical damage to both male and female dogs. Your six foot fence will hardly slow down, much less discourage, a determined male.
